Elmarie & Nick

I met Elmarie years ago, by chance, in Kleinmond during a weekend break. Our travelling party was more than happy to sleep on the dunes, but Elmarie would have none of that and offered us accommodation. It was the start of a wonderul friendship.

Unfortunately as it happens in life our paths took us in different direction until another chance meeting during our 2009 FAB Bridal Expo.

Elmarie,  you have not changed one bit! You are still the kind, loving person with the bubbly personality. It was a privelage to be part of your wedding day.

Here's to you and Nick...

He is the half part of a blessed man
Left to be finished by such as she:
And she a fair divided excellence
Whose fullness of perfection lies in him.

Lelani & Pieter

We are so thrilled to showcase one of our recently married couples, Lelani & Pieter. The couple said their 'I Do's' in the beautiful setting of Beloftebos, Stanford. The STUNNING photographs taken by Sybrand Cillie.

This is my favourite...I love the detail of the forest surrounding the couple!

We've been shopping...

Please welcome the new addition (to the ever growing)  font database...

Reaching a total of more than 1000 glyphs, this font is Maximiliano R. Sproviero’s gift of the year. The aim of the designer was once more to give the user the chance to play and travel from very formal and conservative letterforms to the amazing world of swashes and flourishes. Possibilities of alternating and ligating characters in this font are absolutely fantastic.

We just absolutely LOVE it!

Spring Clean

My apologies for being a bit absent ... we've been so busy! Not that I am complaining. With that said you can imagine what our workspace looked like after a lot of deadlines, the FAB Bridal Expo and new bits & pieces for our upcoming DIY range!

Unfortunately I did not take any photos of our FAB Bridal Expo display... to be quite honest I was not feeling to 'fab' - having less than 18hrs sleep that week! We did however meet some really nice fellow exhibitors: Bianca from Lucky No9, Lina from Makeup by Lina ... and Liesl & her mom from Frostings (whom are not new to us... we ordered the yummy cupcakes for Logan's 2nd B-day celebration from them).

I did however take a photograph of the 'spring cleaned' section of the studio. I just love the sun's glow on this corner.

Fashion Color Report for Spring 2011

Citing exotic destinations like Africa, India, Peru and Turkey as inspiration for spring 2011, designers continue to satisfy consumers’ need to escape everyday challenges with intriguing color combinations that transport them to foreign lands.

“The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “By cleverly combining complementary colors, those that are opposites on the color wheel, they have created a striking intensity to the palette. These unique color combinations make it possible for consumers to pair existing pieces in colors traditionally associated with fall, with new favorites to punch up springtime wardrobes.”
Flirtatious Honeysuckle is a feel-good hue that brings a festive sense of playfulness to this season’s palette. This vibrant pinkish-red for both apparel and cosmetics makes consumers feel alive, and is a perfect post-winter pick-me-up.

Spicy, gregarious and persuasive describe Coral Rose, a sophisticated orange that, much like Beeswax, a warm, honeyed yellow, conjures up feelings of faraway lands and locales. Pair either of these piquant hues with a cool, refreshing color-wheel opposite like Regatta for a vibrant color combination that will add zest to any wardrobe. Romantic, fanciful Lavender implies sensuality with its subtle hint of red undertone. Combine it with Beeswax or Coral Rose for a unique counterpoint.
Alluring Blue Curacao evokes thoughts of tropical destinations and pays homage to the 2010 Color of the Year, Turquoise. Practical consumers can continue to incorporate enticing Caribbean blues into spring by pairing Blue Curacao with warm, complementary colors like Honeysuckle or Coral Rose. Peapod, a fresh yellow-green, brings an organic element to the palette and is reminiscent of the green shoots that signify change and new beginnings traditionally found in spring.
Trans-seasonal neutrals ground this season’s palette and provide a stable backdrop for all the other colors. The so-called “nude hues” are represented in the range of ethereal Silver Peony to dramatically deep Russet. Another dependable background color, Silver Cloud, is the quintessential neutral that consumers can rely on to coordinate with everything in their closet.
For 17 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for spring 2011.

Friday Fun

Taking a break last weekend with good friends was much needed and has contributed to the Friday Fun post this week. (a bit late I must admit ... due to another internet melt-down).

I very rarely comment on label designs ... due to the fact that they are more than often just functional and not extremely creative. BUT then I stumbled (I did not have one sip of wine ... yet) onto the Fairview La Capra Shiraz! You can just imagine my friends confused looks when I begged to take this empty (sad to say I found it empty!) bottle home.

So many times designers are afraid to play with different typfaces... and yet this design boasts more than four! A beautiful mixture of modern yet vintage with a festival kind of feel. The front label has a 'tower' of what looks like pen illustrations of a goat, wine barrels, world map, guitar or violin, a man, a fork, cheese and a band. It is the minimal use of colour and effective spot varnish that appeals to me, apart from the jacket (man in the tower) and a strip at the bottom all other elements are black.

Excited to learn more about this design & product I did some investigation and to my delight found the La Capra Website!  On the site each item in the 'tower' has a story to tell. Not only great design... but content too! 'Deep, scarlet tones speak of excitement and mischief. While the rich aromas of clove and spices lead the palate to bold bramble fruit flavours'

So I'll be off to the shops this weekend on a quest to find my own (full) bottle of La Capra... a wine that will 'transport you to a magical place where the wine flows freely, laughter fills the air and you dance until the sunrise.'

Have a lovely weekend.

Reception Decor & Seating Plan idea no.1

100% Fun, creative and so versatile. Vinyl art stickers offer that instant lift to a bare wall, floor or any other surface... (I tackled our fridge today!). Application is so easy and can be done by simply following a couple of  instructions. The 'low-tack' variations can be applied and removed when needed without damaging any painted surface... this makes it a great way to display your Seating Plan or any other messages for guests ( such as signage to toilets, photobooth, sweets table etc.). Can't afford that crystal chandelier... No problem - just stick a vinyl sticker on a wall for a 'greener - energy saving' option!

Remember to ask your special event venue before sticking any art on the walls or floors.

Gifts & favours catelogue

The tradition of distributing wedding favours is a very old one. It is believed that the first wedding favour, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as a bonbonniere. A bonbonniere is a small trinket box made of crystal, porcelain, and/or precious stones. The contents of these precious boxes were generally sugar cubes or delicate confections, which symbolize wealth and royalty. Sugar was an expensive commodity and was treasured only among the wealthy. As the price of sugar decreased throughout centuries, the tradition of providing gifts to guests reached the general populace and was embraced by couples of modest means.

As sugar became more affordable, bonbonnieres were replaced with almonds. For centuries, almonds were commonly distributed to wedding guests to signify well wishes on the bridegroom’s new life. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced. Confetti soon transformed to sugared almonds, which later evolved into the wedding favours for modern day weddings. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds are presented in a confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coated candy exemplify the bitter sweetness of a marriage.

Today, gifts to guests are commonly known as wedding favours and are shared in cultures worldwide. Wedding favours are diverse and usually complement the theme or season of the event. It all started with a shoe... part 1

One of our favourite recent weddings is that of Elzaan & Denver. The Ceremony & Reception took place in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley at L'Ermitage. Handmade pearl paper, imported diamante buckles, crystal and cream shimmer paper... right through to the final details on the gift boxes for female guests, truly made this one of the most beautiful weddings we had the privilege to work on!

We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we do!

All new exciting things

It has been a while... So much happenings, chaos, late nights and 'manic' creativity! Finally Cape Town's fever broke and I am looking forward to welcoming Autumn with it's moderate temperatures!

This post is not going to be 'bout the weather... but an exciting announcement! Our gift catelogue will be launched this week! I am super excited about all the items. Majority made with love right here in South Africa - like these funky colourful fridge magnets!

'Green' Bouquet

1. Start off with a paper bag or any sheet of paper you wish to use... remember it is always better to recycle what you have than to purchase it new. (I think newspaper flowers will look amazing in a black & white colour scheme!)

2. Draw a circle (the larger the circle, the leafier the flower) and slowly taper it in to the centre like a spiral, keeping the lines about 2cm away from each other.

3. Take your scissor and begin cutting along the line you just drew. Start from the outside and work your way in.

4. Continue cutting on the drawn line until you reach the centre of your spiral.

5. Cut the rest of the paper bag/sheet off the spiral.

6.
Beginning at the widest part of the spiral, start to roll up the paper until you reach the centre of your spiral.

7. Place the rolled paper in the palm of your hand and let it fall loosely apart. You may have to gently 'help' it by turning the centre of the flower to open it up a bit more.

8. For the stem I chose a green pipe cleaner, but you can use your imagination and come up with something different or funky, depending on your project. Flip the flower upside down, and tape the pipe cleaner to the base of the flower.

9. And here is the finished product...

10. Add a couple of fresh flowers and you have a unique bouquet!
